Chapter Six

Cage was still amazed at how Desire was growing by leaps and bounds. Desire Medical Clinic had been completed and had hired two new EMTs, a nurse to run the front desk, and a doctor to work with Dr. James McNeal. The foundation had been poured for the new school, and Sebastian already had plans in the works to expand the firehouse.

New faces were showing up all the time, which made Cage happy, but with new faces came added duty. The sheriff’s department was small. Aside from Sheriff Nash Avery, the town had only two deputies, which was fine since Sebastian’s pack picked up the slack.

Cage sat outside the clinic waiting for Hatcher, who had gone in to talk to Dr. Burke. He was proud Hatcher had taken the steps to try to work out his problems. Cage just hated that his mate was always wrung out when his session was over.

He watched as Damien approached. If Cage thought he had issues, they were nothing compared to his pack member’s. Damien had been held captive for years by Hunters who had experimented on him. Cage wasn’t sure what those experiments involved, but now Damien saw anyone outside his pack as a potential threat.

Hell, he barely trusted his pack.

Damien took a seat next to Cage, scanning their surroundings. “Sebastian wants you to patrol with me tonight. With all the new people in town, he wants to make sure things stay quiet.”

Damien’s leg bounced as he glanced toward the clinic door. Sebastian had tried to talk Damien into seeing Malloy, but the timber wolf had refused, and Malloy hadn’t pushed Damien to talk to him.

“What time?” Cage asked.

Damien shrugged. “Around midnight. I can meet you in town, or we can ride together from home.”

Cage had seen Damien’s upper torso once when Damien had forgotten to close his bedroom door. Horrendous scars crisscrossed his front and back, and there might have been more, but Damien had slammed his door shut before Cage could see anything else.

Working with Damien was easy, but he was as unstable as a cart with three wheels. He had a tendency to attack first and ask questions later. Sebastian made Damien patrol only because he didn’t want Damien shutting himself in his room. Although Cage wasn’t sure how healthy allowing the wolf to roam the town was.

“We can meet back here,” Cage said. “I’ll be in town anyway.”

Damien bit his thumbnail as his gaze flickered from one area to the next. “Hatcher.”

Cage nodded. His heart broke for Damien, but if the guy refused help, there was nothing anyone could do.

Gazing at Cage with those sorrowful brown eyes, Damien nodded before he got up and walked off. Cage watched him until Damien cut the corner and was out of sight.

His frown changed into a smile when Hatcher exited the clinic. As usual, his mate’s eyes were puffy and his nose was red. Hatcher gave Cage a wavering smile as Cage stood and enveloped him in his arms.

“I’m starting to think Dr.
